Modern health care relies on the ability to best interpret available data that may originate from a number of sources, including healthcare professionals, patients, and medical devices. Data science is the process of interpreting data for use within specific contexts. Biomedical informatics is the scientific discipline that is focused on transforming data for providing biomedical researchers and healthcare providers with the most important information at the most critical time.
The course will include both lectures and hands-on experiences for introducing data science concepts and the field of biomedical informatics. From the first day, students will be taught modern computing skills that underpin the fields of data science and biomedical informatics, including working at the Linux command line and using computer programming to explore and analyze biomedical and health data. Students will also gain exposure to the scientific process and have the opportunity to develop short presentations that may be considered for a national meeting. By the end of the course, students will have gained foundational skills for using biomedical and health data that can be used to support biomedical research, medicine, and public health.
By the end of the course students should:
-Be comfortable at the Linux command line
-Be proficient in computer programming
-Get first-hand experience in biomedical and health research
-Understand the scientific method
-Develop writing and presentation skills
The instructors are Neil Sarkar, PhD, MLIS, and Elizabeth Chen, PhD, who are national leaders in biomedical informatics and the inaugural leaders for the Brown Center for Biomedical Informatics.
Prerequisites: This course is open to all interested in developing computational skills for studying biomedicine and health. High School Biology is strongly recommended, but not required.
