COVID-19 Coronavirus Information
for Pre-College Students and Families

Updated Last: May 7, 2020

We have continued to monitor the evolving COVID-19 global health crisis and its implications, and after careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to cancel all residential on-campus and off-campus Pre-College Programs for this second half of the summer. We continue to make decisions that prioritize the health and safety of all Pre-College participants, their families, our staff members and the wider Brown community.

Virtual Learning Opportunities

While we are not able to provide in-person classroom and community experiences this summer, our goal is to provide as many students as possible with the enriching academic experiences and meaningful personal connections that define our Pre-College Programs.

Courses

We are shifting a selection of previously scheduled courses — and adding some new courses — to an online learning format where students will still have the opportunity to learn alongside peers from around the world and experience rigorous college-level coursework. We are dedicated to ensuring that the quality of these courses aligns with our commitment to excellence.

All courses will be offered within the [email protected] Online program, with just a few exceptions: courses for English Language Learners (more details below) and STEM for 9th & 10th Graders and the Leadership Institutes (which have been cancelled altogether).

These new online course offerings will be added to our Course Catalog beginning May 18. We are unable to transition all courses online, so this new format has in many cases led to changes in the course curriculum. Accordingly, students will not be automatically registered for any of these new online courses, and all previously offered residential courses have been removed from student’s course schedules. Instead, students will be able to review the new course descriptions and register for any course of interest using the Course Catalog.

Extracurricular Opportunities

Students will also have opportunities for virtual extra-curricular learning and community engagement, where they will learn alongside peers in scheduled webinars and informational videos, or engage directly with other students through interactive sessions, exploring topics including college preparedness, identity development and more. These experiences will offer students a variety of formats and topics to fit their unique interests and schedules.

If a student would like to participate in student life opportunities, additional information and registration instructions will be available in their student portal on May 18. Students do not need to be registered for a course to participate in this experience — all admitted students are eligible.

Summer 2021

In addition to offering online experiences this summer, we are committed to providing priority access to Summer 2021 programs for all students admitted in 2020. Priority access will include waiving next summer’s application fee, expedited application review and first access to course registration. No action is needed to ensure priority access; we will provide additional details this fall.

Options for Students Who Have Been Admitted or are Enrolled

We appreciate students’ understanding and recognize that determining the plan that works best for them this summer may be challenging. Here, we have outlined options while considering a Brown Pre-College experience for Summer 2020:

  • If a student is admitted to STEM for Rising 9th & 10th Graders, eligibility for [email protected] Online will vary. Students must be completing 9th grade this year to be eligible for [email protected] Online. All eligible students will automatically be transferred to the [email protected] Online Program prior to May 18.
  • If a student is admitted to [email protected] for English Language Learners, we are designing online course options for this program which will allow students to learn and develop their English language proficiency. Students will only be eligible for this specific offering.
  • If a student is admitted to any other Pre-College Program, they are eligible to register for any open [email protected] Online offering. Course enrollment is first-come, first-served until courses are filled, and does not account for previous course registrations.
  • If a student does not intend to participate in any Pre-College programs this summer, they should complete a withdrawal form (available in their student portal) as soon as possible to expedite a refund. Refunds will be processed in the order received and may take four to six weeks to process. Program fees will be refunded according to the refund policy developed specifically for circumstances related to COVID-19.

For Students Applying to Pre-College Programs

If a student is interested in one of our new online courses, please know that we continue to review complete applications until June 1 or until all courses have reached capacity. To check application status, students should log in to the Student Portal to ensure they have submitted all required application materials.

All students admitted to a Summer 2020 program will be eligible for priority access in Summer 2021. Priority access will include waiving next summer’s application fee, expedited application review, and first access to course registration.

Information Sessions

We will be hosting two virtual information sessions with Pre-College Team staff members to provide more details about our new online courses, virtual extracurricular opportunities, priority access to Summer 2021, and more.

Sessions will be offered on Tuesday, May 12 and Tuesday, May 19 at 12:00 p.m EST. Please register here. If you are not able to attend, recordings of these information sessions will also be available on our website.

This website will be updated as needed. Additional information on the University’s overall response is available on its comprehensive COVID-19 website. Please contact our Program Advising team at 401-863-7900 Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. EST or [email protected] with any questions or concerns.

Updated last: April 16, 2020

Due to the ongoing worldwide impact of the pandemic, we have made the difficult decision to cancel residential Pre-College programs scheduled to take place during the first half of Summer 2020. We are greatly disappointed to miss the opportunity to share these unique experiences with the students who wanted to join us this summer. Based on guidance and projections from health agencies, we made the decision to cancel to protect the health and safety of all Pre-College participants, their families, our staff members and the wider Brown community.

Specifically, the following residential programs both on-campus and off-campus are cancelled:

  • [email protected] courses occurring between June 14 and July 10

  • the first session of [email protected] for English Language Learners* (June 28 – July 10)

  • the first and second sessions of the Leadership Institute* (June 14 – 26, June 28 – July 10)

  • the Location-Based program in Washington, D.C. (July 5 – 11)

  • the first session of BELL: Florida* (July 10 – 17)

  • the first session of BELL: Rhode Island* (June 28 – July 9)

  • on-campus Pre-Baccalaureate courses (June 21 – August 7)

*Later sessions for these programs are currently scheduled to run.

Because this situation is evolving, we will continue to closely monitor the impact and implications of the pandemic before making final decisions about other residential on- and off-campus programs that occur between July 12 and August 7. We expect to update this site with additional information by May 16 regarding the status of these programs.

Expanded Online Offerings

While we are unable to offer some of our planned programs, in the coming weeks we will be adding new non-credit and (for Pre-Baccalaureate students) credit-bearing courses to our online offerings, many from among those originally scheduled to be offered in-person. All students currently enrolled in any on- or off-campus programs are welcome to enroll in these courses to join us virtually this summer.

With a variety of courses shifting to an online learning format, students will still have the opportunity to learn alongside peers from around the world and experience rigorous, college-level academics. Additionally, we will offer opportunities for extra-curricular engagement, where students will be able to interact with peers while exploring topics such as college preparedness, identity development and more.

Summer 2021

In addition to offering online experiences this summer, we are committed also to providing priority access to Summer 2021 programs for all students admitted in 2020. Priority access will include waiving next summer’s application fee, expedited application review, and first access to course registration. No action is needed to ensure priority access; we will provide students with additional details this fall.

Options to Consider for Students Who Have Been Admitted or are Already Enrolled

We appreciate students’ understanding and recognize that determining the plan that works best for them this summer may be challenging. Here, we have outlined options while considering a Brown Pre-College experience for Summer 2020:

  • If a student would like to consider one of our new online courses, we expect to update our Course Catalog with courses we’ve added by May 16.

  • If a student would like to register for a course or program scheduled to start on July 12 or later, they may do so using the Course Catalog.

  • If a student is already registered for a course or program starting on July 12 or later, their current registration will not change.

  • If a student is interested in registering for a course that is part of an alternate program than the one to which they’ve been admitted, they should contact us at [email protected].

  • If a student would like to withdraw from Summer 2020, they should complete a withdrawal form as soon as possible to expedite their refund. Refunds will be processed in the order received and may take four to six weeks to process. We will refund program fees according to this refund policy we developed specifically for circumstances related to COVID-19.

Information for Students Applying to Pre-College Programs

If a student is interested in one of our new online courses or an in-person program currently scheduled to start on July 12 or later, please know that we continue to review complete applications. If a student is unsure if their application is complete, they should log in to their Student Portal to ensure they have submitted all required application materials, as detailed on this application checklist.

All students admitted to a Summer 2020 program will be eligible for priority access in Summer 2021. Priority access will include waiving next summer’s application fee, expedited application review, and first access to course registration.

Our summer programs are central to our vibrant and diverse academic community, and we look forward to welcoming students to Brown to contribute to and benefit from this distinctive experience.

Brown University remains open, and we continue to anticipate an exciting summer of Pre-College programs on campus, online and at other locations. At this time, we plan to proceed with these programs, noting that decisions will ultimately be guided by recommendations from public health authorities.

In the event that a program is cancelled due to low enrollment or for reasons outside of the University’s control, program deposit and fees already paid will be refunded according to our refund policy.

We encourage students to complete their applications and, upon admission, register for courses at least six weeks prior to their start. This will provide the time for us to plan most effectively for the meaningful and memorable experiences that students anticipate.

This website will be updated as needed. If more focused information needs to be shared, we will do so via email to students and families, and in the student portal. Additional information on the University’s overall response is available on its comprehensive COVID-19 website.

  • With the impact of the COVID-19 coronavirus expanding across the globe, and Brown’s Summer Pre-College Programs over three months away, the University is closely monitoring scientific and health care recommendations from experts and authorities both locally and globally.
  • While it is too early to predict the precise impact on each of our programs and all of the students and families enrolled, Brown will continue to rely on guidance from the U.S. Department of State, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and the World Health Organization.
  • To keep the community informed about the virus, Brown has launched a COVID-19 website with detailed updates and information about the illness and the University’s preparedness and response. While much of the information is intended for students, faculty, and staff who are year-round community members, updates about summer programs will be posted on this page.
  • Information on this website will be updated regularly. If more focused information needs to be shared, we will do so via email to students and families, and in the student portal.
  • At this point, we encourage families with students traveling to one of our programs from affected areas to:
    • monitor local travel restrictions, as well as the U.S. State Department website, for updates;
    • check-in with your airline carrier closer to your time of travel to ensure you are prepared for any related protocols; and
    • consider insurance that covers cancelation or change in travel plans.
  • We will have detailed protocols in place this summer should anyone participating in our programs become ill. These processes will be consistent with local and federal guidance. We will update this page as protocols are finalized in the next few months.
  • If you have questions about financial policies, please review this information: https://precollege.brown.edu/policies/#financial
  • If you have any immediate questions or concerns, please contact our Program Advising team at 401-863-7900 Monday-Friday 8:30AM - 4:45PM EST or [email protected].

We expect to have a robust, exciting summer on Brown’s campus and at our program locations in and out of the United States, and we look forward to meeting you then!
