Want to improve your English? Study in English

Learning new material - especially at a college level - and in a language that is not one’s primary language, can present challenges to any student - no matter how well prepared they are academically or how deeply interested in the subject matter they may be. Summer@Brown Courses for English Language Learners (ELL) are designed for students who possess a degree of fluidity in English, yet seek a higher degree of proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, or writing in order to fully master the content they wish to learn. Courses are offered in a broad range of academic disciplines, reflecting the breadth and depth of Brown’s undergraduate curriculum, and are supplemented with additional support in English Language learning. By offering students this additional support in English language proficiency, and doing so within the context of an academic discipline reflecting their interests, students are able to deepen their understanding and grow their knowledge by gaining a stronger and more nuanced command of the English language.
Summer@Brown Courses for English Language Learners are, like all Summer@Brown courses, designed to reflect the challenges of first year college level study, and so provide solid preparation for further study at the University level in each discipline. It is not, however, a program for students who are at the beginning stages of learning English: students should have had at least three full years of English language instruction prior to enrolling in the program and possess a degree of fluidity in speaking, listening, writing, and reading. This degree of proficiency will enable students to fully and independently engage in both the academic and co-curricular activities offered at Summer@Brown.
The Summer@Brown for English Language Learners Program provides challenging academic opportunities without the pressure of formal grades, allowing students to concentrate on learning and the process of scholarship. In lieu of a final grade, students will receive a Course Performance Report and Certificate of Completion after successful completion of the class.
