Please describe your Action Plan in one or two sentences.

My plan is to create educational programs for students in the island of Puerto Rico to gain insight into the roots of gender inequity and it’s consequences in Latin American communities.

What steps and efforts have you taken so far to advance your project? Please be specific.

I have initiated a donation drive where students from the school came together to donate a myriad of objects and necessities to the individuals in the domestic shelter of Hogar Ruth. I interviewed officials of the domestic shelter that work to fight gender inequity and then provided the school newspaper with an article dissecting the interview.

How did you get interested in this issue? Why does this issue matter to you and should it matter to others?

This gender inequity especially disguised in domestic violence was and still is ravishing my island in unprecedented ways. So I was motivated to work toward a future where everyone could be promised peace and freedom of harm.

How have others been involved in your project? If you did work with other people, what are the challenges and benefits of working with others? If you've done this project almost entirely on your own, why?

There are mostly benefits when working with others because I gained insight to the lives and experiences that other individuals went through; I also learned how each person worked and managed their time. I also understood the arduous yet impactful experiences that domestic violence officials go through on a daily basis to help women in need.

What have you learned about yourself? What insight have you gained?

I have learned that when I’m focused on getting things done and have an action plan, I can do so much. I’ve gained insight on Latin American culture and all the factors correlated to gender inequity within my community and the island of Puerto Rico.

What tips and advice would you give to new students as they think about developing and working on their own Action Plans?

I would tell them to never give up because it’s so worth it… If you have any other ideas, never ignore them because they might help to form future plans that might aid so many people.
