Welcome to Brown Pre-College!

As an enrolled student, you will receive notifications in your Student Portal and via email. Please be sure to check both regularly and pay close attention as there will be information about items required for onboarding. Some items must be completed by a firm deadline and all should be done prior to the beginning of your course. Email is the primary way we connect with students and their parents/guardians. If you would like to use a different email address from the one you provided during the application process, please email us at precollege@brown.edu to make the change.

What to Expect

  • Required forms are listed in your Student Portal. Please note that additional forms may be added to your checklist. The link to submit your payment will be added to your Student Portal at the end of March. Please be sure to check your email and Student Portal frequently as this is how we will share information. For instance, we will send you an email letting you know when you may begin the forms process. Required forms must be completed by the stated deadline to ensure your enrollment remains active.
  • Payment is required by the payment deadline. Payment deadlines, accepted methods of payment and payment processes are all outlined on our Financial Policies and Payment Information webpage. You can also click through the payment link when it appears in your portal beginning in late March.

If you will be studying with Brown Pre-College in person, here are a few things to remember before your arrival on campus or on location:

  • Check back on this page for a complete packing list and instructions for your arrival on campus. This information will be made available in the spring,

Get to know on-campus resources! Pre-College students studying on our historic campus in Providence, RI, including those who are commuting to campus, have access to a variety of resources including:

  • Stephen Roberts Campus Center: A fun place to hang out when you aren’t in class. Grab lunch at The Blue Room, find a comfy chair to sink into and finish your homework or head to the lower level to relax while you shoot pool with your friends.
  • The Brown University Libraries: Brown’s libraries have more books than you could read in a lifetime, with over 250 special collections and ample quiet space to study.
  • Sharpe Refectory: Affectionately known as The Ratty, Brown’s largest dining hall is a fave of students, staff and faculty alike. Check out the soft serve ice cream machine for a cool treat!
  • Nelson Fitness Center: All students enrolled in on-campus courses have access to the gym and the pool — a great way to cool off this summer!

We’re delighted that you will be participating in Brown’s Pre-College Program this summer. We are excited to get to know you, and eager for you to share your unique talents with us and with your classmates.

Our online courses are facilitated in one of three modalities—please confirm your course's modality in your student portal. The three possible modalities are:

  1. Asynchronous: The course will be offered entirely asynchronously, meaning, you won’t be meeting with your classmates or instructor during a pre-set time, giving you the opportunity to set your own schedule each day, and allowing for the most flexibility and self-directed learning.
  2. Mostly asynchronous: The course will include a majority of asynchronous content and optional opportunities for live sessions with your instructor and classmates to supplement course material.
  3. Blended: The course will include asynchronous content and 1 to 3 prescheduled, required live sessions each week. These required live sessions are integral to the course experience

Please note that online courses do not include a residential component. You will not have a residence hall or housing assigned at Brown during your enrollment.

The following information applies to both Brown Experiential Education (BEE) and Brown Environmental Leadership Lab (BELL) students:

  • Submitting forms on time for BEE and BELL programs is essential, as dietary and housing accommodations are arranged further in advance.
  • Do not book flights prior to receiving a program confirmation AND reviewing the arrival and departure information for the program you are enrolled in.
  • Students enrolled in BEE and BELL programs are asked to participate in one mandatory pre-departure orientation session. We also offer one optional meet and greet for students and parents to ask questions about the required forms and travel information.
  • The packing lists for BEE and BELL programs are specific and important to review in full.
