Describe your project in detail.

I am working on an "Initiative" where I am helping High Schoolers from my community to know the existence of boarding school scholarships opportunities and precollege programs experiences.

What is the need or issue that you are trying to address with your project?

I identified that not a lot of youth from my city [know] about the programs that are available where we can experience College life and courses where you can learn more about college affordability and get motivated to reach higher Education.

What next steps will you take regarding your Action Plan? Is it complete? If not, what is your plan to continue working on it?

I was able to help enroll 5 students to enroll for the summer of 2024, and I am preparing already for the new cycle that starts in November.  I am reaching out again to students to talk about the opportunities.

How did you get interested in this issue? Why does this issue matter to you and should it matter to others? What new insight or learning do you have about this issue?

This Initiative is very personal to me, because when I learned about the opportunity to come to Brown University for a precollege experience, I automatically dismissed myself of the possibility because my financial situation wouldn't allow me to participate on the program. After applying and been admitted with [a] scholarship I realized that a lot of students miss the opportunity.

What impact do you think your project has had?

I am proud of the impact that I have already seemed to have on students when they get admitted and after going to the experience. The students came back enthusiastic and hopeful about their future.

How has your involvement in this project impacted you personally? What have you learned about yourself?

I have learned that my voice and actions seem to motivate, assist, coach and guide others around me. My enthusiasm has become overwhelming!

What challenges and obstacles have you experienced and how have you addressed these challenges?

The biggest obstacle I have faced is that students from my community automatically believe that they are not good candidates for… precollege experiences… The way I have been able to address these challenges are showing them my own experience and financial situation.

What tips and advice would you give to new students as they think about developing and working on their own Action Plans?

I will advise them to go to the program knowing that they will learn things that will be life changing for them, they will learn what they care about and the action that they take can really impact the life of others.
