WHO CAN I CONTACT IF I HAVE QUESTIONS ABOUT THE ROLE?
Please email precollegestudentlife-hr@brown.edu with any questions about the position.
WHAT IS PRE-COLLEGE STUDENT LIFE LOOKING FOR IN A STAFF MEMBER?
We value candidates who demonstrate strong customer service, crisis management, mentorship, a commitment to working with young people and an eagerness to learn. The summer season is fast-paced and each day brings new opportunities and challenges each day. For the positions that supervise other staff, we seek candidates with strong leadership, supervisory, and crisis management skills. Prior experience in higher education, residence life, student programming, or related fields is highly valued, however, there is not a single “profile” that we are looking for.
IS THIS A FULL-TIME ROLE?
Yes. All of our positions are considered full-time, seasonal positions with responsibilities that often extend into evenings and weekends.
WHERE WILL I LIVE ON CAMPUS?
Seasonal staff are housed in Brown University residence halls. Assignments vary depending on your role:
- Resident Assistants typically live on a floor with students.
- Graduate staff, Program Assistants and Housing Assistants may live on a floor with peers or students, depending on housing availability and program needs.
- Professional staff will live in a space with other professional staff.
All staff have a single room and access to a staff-only bathroom facility. Rooms in buildings without central air conditioning will receive a portable cooling unit. Please note that most residence halls do not have elevators
Staff may request a housing accommodation to ensure their space meets their needs. Brown undergraduates should note that this accommodations process is separate from the one used during the academic year, as you are considered an employee during the summer. Information about this process will be shared during onboarding in late spring.
All staff housing assignments will be shared on move in day.
CAN I TAKE ANOTHER JOB OR COURSE WHILE WORKING WITH PRE-COLLEGE?
Maybe - it depends on the role.
Our Student Life Manager and STEM Resident Assistant positions require a full-time commitment, including evenings, weekends, and participation in the on-call system. Outside employment or coursework is not permitted during the on-campus dates.
Graduate positions require significant time and commitment, including evening and weekend responsibilities. While taking courses is not prohibited, we strongly encourage candidates to carefully consider the workload and consult with their academic program before committing. Any courses taken during their contract must be directly connected to the work they are doing with Brown Pre-College Programs.
Seasonal staff positions, with the exception of the STEM Resident Assistant role, allow for staff to have an outside commitment. The expectation is that your role with Brown Pre-College will be considered your first and most important priority of the summer. Given the responsibilities of this position, a maximum of 15 hours a week of outside commitments or one Brown University Summer Session course are permitted. Outside commitments include, but are not limited to, any employment, internships, research positions, teaching assistant positions, or educational opportunities including class requirements. Staff members must obtain permission from the Assistant Director of Staff Development in Pre-College Student Life for any outside commitment or coursework prior to the start of the commitment/course.
WILL I RECEIVE TRAINING?
Yes. Staff arrive on campus in early June to participate in a comprehensive training program. During this time, you will meet your direct supervisor, your peers, and your team. Training will cover crisis response, supervision, student development, program logistics, and role-specific expectations. Training includes interactive workshops, small group discussions, and hands-on practice activities such as Behind Closed Doors.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WEEK LOOK LIKE?
Staff schedules vary by role, but all include a mix of student support, administrative tasks, staff meetings, evening responsibilities, and on-call rotations. While no two days are the same, you can expect a full and dynamic work week.
WHAT ARE MY RESPONSIBILITIES ON WEEKENDS?
Responsibilities vary by role, but staff in all positions are expected to work during Sunday Check-Ins throughout the summer. Additionally, staff may be assigned on-call shifts, training sessions and move-out shifts on weekends.
WHAT ARE THE START AND END DATES OF THE POSITION?
Exact dates vary by role, but most positions generally begin in early June and conclude in late July. Dates are specified in the position descriptions. Please reach out to precollegestudentlife-hr@brown.edu if you have any questions about the dates of employment and how they align with your availability.
