Paris Palimpsest: Walking Through Time

Through guided site visits and interactive discussions, students will uncover the political, artistic and architectural transformations that have shaped Paris over the centuries.

This course will take students through iconic locations, including:

  • Notre-Dame Cathedral – Newly restored after the 2019 fire, this Gothic masterpiece has stood for centuries, bearing witness to both triumphs and tragedies.
  • The Louvre – Once a royal palace, now the world’s most famous museum, preserving centuries of art and history.
  • The Eiffel Tower – Built for the 1889 World’s Fair, it was once meant to be temporary but now stands as the ultimate Parisian symbol.
  • The Latin Quarter – A hub of intellectual and revolutionary activity for over 800 years, home to the Sorbonne and Roman ruins.
  • Versailles – The extravagant royal palace that became the center of absolute monarchy before the French Revolution.
  • Montmartre – The artistic heart of Paris, once home to Picasso, Van Gogh and the birthplace of bohemian culture.
  • Le Marais – From aristocratic mansions to a vibrant Jewish and LGBTQ+ community, this district reflects Paris’s ever-changing identity.

Students will explore how political power, artistic expression and social movements have shaped the city, examining everything from royal decrees to modern-day street art.
